Most of us love a good romance. Where better to
find it than in the tale of El Zorro, the Spanish Californian of the
early 19th century, who charmed his way into the hearts of many with his
charisma and his daring deeds on behalf of the people in the name of
justice.
The character of Don Diego de la Vega and his alter ego,
Zorro, was created by Johnston McCulley in 1919. Originally
published in serial form, the "Zorro" tales have inspired
countless retellings over the years. Douglas Fairbanks played the
role in a movie, so did Tyrone Power. Recently, Anthony Hopkins
and Antonio Banderas portrayed two generations of Zorros in "The
Mask of Zorro." Television has been no stranger to
Zorro either. Between 1957-59, Disney presented a
"Zorro" television series featuring Guy Williams as The
Fox. In the early 1990's Duncan Regehr played the part in
yet another "Zorro" television series produced by New World
Productions.
The Secret of Zorro is a serial novel which
carries on the Zorro story. And we warn you, there is much
carrying on. While adventures ensue, this is first and foremost a
romance.
A word about "ratings." It is the
internet, after all. "The Secret of
Zorro" would, if filmed and rated by the Motion Picture Board,
probably get a PG-13 rating. We pass that on to readers who seek
guidance on these matters.
Now for the disclaimer as regards who owns whom. In the
complex world of intellectual property, trademark, and copyright law, we
readily confess that the several established characters in this story
'borrowed' from Johnston McCulley's pulp fiction and the original Disney
series legally belong to others. We are just bringing them out to play.
We hope they consider it worth the experience.
